RCWW Honours Local Recipient for "Service Above Self"

RCWW Honours Local Recipient for "Service Above Self"On Thursday, October 30th, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West joined 4 other local Rotary Clubs to honour individuals who have demonstrated significant dedication to “Service Above Self,” contributing their time, talent, and resources to making a positive difference in Winnipeg and beyond. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is one of Rotary’s highest honours, named after the founder of Rotary International. The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West was pleased to award Jim Steep, Executive Director of Agape Table with this honour. Jim had a distinguished career in Manitoba’s golf community. In “retirement” he took on increasing leadership roles with Agape Table, one of our city’s most important resources for vulnerable and in need citizens. It was in this role that the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West began an ongoing relationship with Agape Table. The event took place at the Birchwood Inn and brought together Rotarians, community leaders, and guests to celebrate outstanding service and commitment to the community. ![]() RCWW's Kelly Ryback (L) Presents Jim Steep (R) With his Award. |
Building Bridges by Building FencesIn partnership with Westminster Housing Society the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West has just finished its fence renewal project on Spence Street. The project included the demolition, debris removal, post setting and new fence construction; a big job by a dedicated crew of Winnipeg West volunteers. Using a combination of materials donated by Westminster Housing & purchased by RCWW, our club provided the brute force and fence building expertise to construct a new fence for this Spence Street residence. Duplicating a design that fits in with the neighbourhood, the fencing crew worked over several days in September & early October to complete this project. By all accounts, this was a fun project and makes a significant difference to the Spence Street neighbourhood. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

International Wilderness Adventure for Youth![]() The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West recently sponsored a local student to participate in the Rotary Club of Sioux Lookout’s “INTERNATIONAL WILDERNESS CANOE CAMP”. Caleb Chapnick returned from this exciting adventure and spoke to our Club on August 21st of his adventures showing several slides and said that the group of 16 met in Sioux Lookout to begin a canoe trip of 160 kilometers. The group consisted of a number of international exchange students coming from, Mexico, Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, Taiwan, Spain and the Czech Republic. The group met for 3 days training before they set out by bus to their launching point. The trip was on waterways traditionally used by the indigenous peoples of the area. They spent 8 to 9 hours a day paddling and portaging and there were many grueling but enjoyable days. Another example of how the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West supports and encourages growth and leadership skills in our youth. |

Rotary Partners with Westminster HousingThe Westminster Housing Society (WHS), a key provider of affordable housing in Winnipeg’s West Broadway area, is collaborating with Winnipeg Rotary Clubs to enhance its properties. WHS owns and manages approximately 100 housing units. These properties, acquired two decades ago, are undergoing a much-needed major maintenance and upgrade program. With limited funds, WHS is prioritizing interior renovations and energy efficiency improvements, leaving little for exterior landscaping. Winnipeg Rotary Clubs have stepped in, initiating a "greening up" effort for several properties. HFTC Landscape Architects are providing expert advice on plant materials, while Five Stones Property Management, the WHS property managers, are also participating. Rotary members are committing to hands-on work, including follow-up watering to ensure the success of new plantings. The initial focus of this partnership is on two properties on Spence Street. At the first, a double lot, the front room serves as a tenant’s hub for meetings and community gatherings. The goal was to transform the outdoor space into an extension of this hub for summer use and an informal tenant drop-in area. ![]() Rotary Club of Winnipeg West's Kish Modha & West Broadway Community Organization's Executive Director - Amanda Enns On Saturday, June 14, Rotarians, WHS Board members, and tenants conducted a significant cleanup, weeding, pruning, and planting session at both locations. Areas overrun by weeds were cleared and replanted with trees and perennials. Rotarian volunteers are also committed to regular watering of the new plants. To further enhance the space at the first property, four folding chairs, two umbrella stands (with donated umbrellas), and two small folding patio tables were purchased. A children’s swing set and two additional patio chairs were also donated. Six Winnipeg Rotary Clubs are jointly funding these material costs. ![]() Rotary Cub of Winnipeg West's Bob Foster & Alan Goddard with WHS Board member Bryce Vincent The positive reaction from tenants, including the tenant who received five blueberry bushes, underscored the impact of the initiative. This project has also received extensive coverage in local community newspapers, “The Leaf” and “Streets”. Future plans include spreading gravel in the dirt parking area, installing paving slabs along the muddy walkway, and repainting the small side deck and existing picnic furniture. These easy-to-complete tasks await volunteer participation. Once these are finished, discussions will begin on the next priorities for the partnership. ![]() Rotary Club of Winnipeg's President Frank Cosway with Rotary Club of Winnipeg West's Terry Dick

Cyber CafeIn addition to the great work we do in the Winnipeg community, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg West also extends is reach to projects around the world, including participation in water projects in Uganda, polio vaccinations in Africa, schools in Guatemala, and most recently, support of an orphanage in Manzanillo, Mexico. The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West’s relationship with the Mexican orphanage has led to an exciting opportunity to be involved with a new initiative spearheaded by The Children’s Foundation International (TCF). Many children in Mexico face harsh realities without parents, basic necessities, or family warmth. The Children’s Foundation International provides essential support, offering hope and shelter to these vulnerable children at the Casa Hogar Los Angelitos in Manzanillo, Mexico. https://tcfcares.org/ The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West has recently supported TCF in the establishment of a CYBER Café in Manzanillo Mexico. From the Founder & CEO of TCF Cares, “Thank you so much for your generous support and believing in the mission and goals we have of rescuing and changing the lives and futures of young people. Chicken Fest - Why We Do What We DoChickenFest is our Club’s major fundraiser. Each year we deliver meals to workplaces all over Winnipeg. With our corporate partner, Chicken Delight of Canada Ltd., we dedicate our respective teams to sell, promote, schedule and deliver lunches and dinners across the city. No order is too big or too small. Rotarians give of their time (and vehicles) to deliver orders to offices, warehouses, factories and schools. Smaller orders can be picked up at one of 10 Chicken Delight locations making it a convenient way to support a truly community event. It’s a huge undertaking each year with months of planning and execution. Why all the fuss? Our mission “TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE” drives us to raise funds to support our charitable work in the city. With a keen focus on youth, we choose a worthy Signature Project each year. This year we chose the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation’s summer camp program. By supporting the camp, we help kids with disabilities enjoy the camp experience, enriching their lives. This year was our 74th year of “ChickenFesting”, making us one of Winnipeg’s longest running charity events. Next year, we will be celebrating our diamond anniversary.
