On July 2021, the Federal Government announced the creation of a new federal statutory (STAT) holiday on September 30th, known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The creation of this new STAT addresses one of the 94 Calls to Action from the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West recognizes the importance of this day for our members and our community to reflect and recognize the brutal hardships endured by Indigenous people in the residential school system and honour Indigenous legacies.
The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West will recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and as such has funded a Truth and Reconciliation event at Ross Brook House. The event begins at 5:00PM in the field across from Ross Brook house.
There will be a feast complete with stew and bannock, a drum group along with elders to explain the significance of reconciliation as well as hand out orange T shirts with the quote on the front of shirt from Sr. Geraldine Macnamara order of Canada speech "No child who does not want to be alone should ever have to be"
The recognition for this day gives us all an opportunity to understand, grow and build bridges. We are encouraging our members and community to wear orange to raise awareness and to honour the thousands of survivors.
