The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person, are held on Treaty One lands. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.

In addition to our fairly regular guest John Forrest (Helen's son) we were joined by two members of the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise, Terry Brouillet & Tom Everson.
Terry & Tom were on a road trip and decided to drop in on RCWW.
Terry & Tom presented their Club Banner to our President Bob Foster.
Our speaker Caleb Chapnick was joined by his dad Colin Chapnick.

Fellowship Lunch - August 14
Good turn out for our fellowship lunch at Assiniboine Park! These informal lunches are always fun and a good chance to try some new dining locations. Kelly Ryback does a great job in lining up new venues for us. Never been? Watch for the announcement of our next location.

Caleb's Excellent Adventure
(Rotary Club of Sioux Lookout's Annual Wilderness Canoe Camp)
President Bob introduced our speaker, Caleb Chapnick. Caleb recently participated in a Rotary Club of Winnipeg West sponsored wilderness adventure.
Caleb showed several slides and said that the group of 16 met in Sioux Lookout to begin a canoe trip of 160 kilometers. The group consisted of a number of international exchange students coming from, Mexico, Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, Taiwan, Spain & the Czech Republic.
Caleb said they met for 3 days training before they set out by bus to their launching point. The trip was on waterways used by the indigenous peoples. They spent 8 to 9 hours a day paddling & portaging and there were many grueling but enjoyable days.
They saw some wildlife and did some fishing.
Caleb thanked the club for sponsoring him on this adventure and intends to do similar adventures in the future.
Bob thanked Caleb for his interesting presentation.

More from President Bob- Westminster Housing
With respect to Westminster Housing, the steering committee met yesterday evening (August 20). President Bob reports:
There are three small jobs left to finish our involvement at 189 Spence. There is probably sufficient money available from last year’s contributions to complete this work. The hope is that we will be able to “parcel out” the three jobs to three clubs, to take on these small projects independently this fall. This will be on the agenda for an upcoming Winnipeg Presidents’ meeting on September 6.
There are two new projects planned for this fall. One is the replacement of rotted, unsightly front fencing at 214 and 217 Spence. Sufficient fencing material is being donated by others to do at least one fence. The second project is to hold another “planting day” at 283 Furby and other locations, similar to the planting day which took place in June at 189 and 182 Spence. Funding for the purchase of plant materials for this project will come from the $2000 grant which we have received from the West Broadway Community Organization. ”P-day” is scheduled for Sunday, September 28. Many Rotary hands will be required for both of these fall projects. More details to come.

Golden Rainbow Fund
We're getting close to the year-end for the Golden Rainbow Fund. The Winnipeg Foundation matches every $9 contributed with $1. That's an 11.11% return.
Finally after several weeks of deferred best wishes, the club sang Happy Birthday to Jack Peterson & Bob Foster. It appears that the presents were lost in the mail!
