SERVING WINNIPEG SINCE AUGUST 27, 1951

Volume 1, Issue 6, September 4, 2025

Land Acknowledgement

The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person,  are held on Treaty One lands.  We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.

We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Our Regular Club meeting venue may be changing.  Our next regular Club meeting on September 18th will be at Smitty's Restaurant & Lounge - Winnipeg Westwood, 477 Westwood Dr, Winnipeg, MB R3K 1G5.

Why?  The club is losing money due to rising meal costs and minimum meal guarantees at our current location.  The Board is not interested in increasing members dues and subsidizing rising costs at the expense of our numerous community projects.

Smitty's has no guarantee minimums, a better menu selection, lower overall costs, a private room with adequate capacity & an audio visual set up that will work for our Club.

The September 18th meeting will be a trial run to determine the suitability of this location.  Please come out and give the Board your feedback.  There's plenty of parking and is ground level accessible.

See you at Smitty's on the 18th!

(Who wants to bet someone shows up at the Birchwood?)

The Summer Camp program was our 2025 ChickenFest Signature Project.

Beer Today, Gone Tomorrow

Woo hoo, our Rotary Beer is here!  Members picked up their orders at the meeting today.  This may be the secret to a great meeting.

Remember, beer won't solve your problems, but then again neither will milk!

September 4 - Meeting Program

President Bob had a few things on his mind today. In addition to the discussion regarding a possible relocation of our meeting venue, Bob also updated us some potential new projects we can become involved in on Spence Street.

Our club is looking at taking on a couple of small projects this fall. Bob described the possible projects, and a general discussion was held on which of these projects we, as a club, could manage.  The proposed projects include:
  • laying some paving blocks to complete a walkway at 189 Spence
  • replacing a front fence at 214 Spence with most of the materials donated by others.
Other clubs are taking on other small projects.

There are a couple of other projects that may be better suited for tackling in the spring.  Stay tuned!

President Bob's Reminders & Announcements

  • Fellowship BBQ lunch at Kelly’s Sept. 11 (members only);
  • Sept. 18 regular meeting at Smitty's Restaurant - Westwood

Golden Rainbow Fund

We're getting close to the year-end for the Golden Rainbow Fund.  The Winnipeg Foundation matches every $9 contributed with $1.  That's an 11.11% return.

Sustain our projects and build a legacy.

  • Consider applying for Family of Rotary reporter.  Pay and benefits are great & you'll earn the unending adoration of the Board.
  • Provide Bob with suggestions for alternate Community Service ideas - Agape is good but maybe something that doesn't involve early mornings!
  • Provide us with email addresses for those whom you would like to receive the WestWind Newsletter (spouses/partners/family/friends/prospects)
  • Share this Newsletter with someone!
