Land Acknowledgement

The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person,  are held on Treaty One lands.  We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.

We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

January 15 Meeting Program - Speaker: Ken Friesen

President Bob introduced our speaker, Ken Friesen, a Manitoba adventurer.

Ken opened his talk mentioning some of his hero’s such as Sir Edmund Hillary and
Shackleton.

In Ken’s case his passion was the Whiteshell. Back in the early 1980’s he and his
cousin dared each other to go to all the lakes in the Whiteshell. His cousin moved away but Ken was hooked on this passion. Starting in 1984, for the next 14 years he, his wife and a number of friends worked on completing this project. While Ken sometimes went alone or with his wife, over the years there were 31 friends that went on trips with him.

Some trips were shorter day trips and others were 5 took 7 days. He enjoyed the
wildlife, the vistas but more than anything the brotherhood these trips built.
In 1998 he completed his last trip to Last Lake where he left a memorial. He returned to the site in 2025 but was unable to locate the memorial.

Over the years many friends urged him to write a book about his adventures. He wrote a couple of short stories about one or two trips and when those were praised, he decided to proceed to write a book. (The advent of Covid in 2020 gave him the extra time he needed)

The book was published in July 2025 (Tiptoe to Last Lake) and sold very well.

Questions were asked about any injuries he suffered and Ken replied that his biggest
injury was after a TV interview when he tripped.

Ken had maps and displays showing all the lakes in the Whiteshell.

Bob thanked Ken for his interesting presentation.

Special Guests

Kelly introduced his friend and potential new member, Ben Hermary.  Great to have some new (younger) faces around the table!  Welcome Ben!

AGAPE Table update:

Kelly is accepting empty/clean pill bottles & winter clothing items (socks, mitts, gloves) to be delivered to AGAPE.

As AGAPE's new building nears completion there may be new volunteer opportunities for our club (other than the 7:30 am - 10:00 am shift we currently have).  Stay tuned.

Next Thursday is our AGAPE day. Immediately following our early morning shift, Jim Steep (AGAPE's E.D.) will take us on a tout of the new building.  Total # of people will be capped at seven for safety reasons.  Please let Kelly know if you're interested. (It's not necessary to serve at 7:30 am to take the tour ... you can still sleep in.)

Fines Master:

Helen was our fines master today and did a masterful job of lightening our pockets with questions about current events.  Helen gets the special distinction of being our first fines master of 2026!

Good job Helen!

Thought For The Day

President Bob's words of wisdom:

“It is not sufficient to look at all sides of the problem. You must look at the problem from all sides.”  (Interpretation: don’t just look at the problem from your own limited point of view, try also to look at the problem the way others would look at it with perhaps very different points of view.)
