The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person, are held on Treaty One lands. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.
We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.
Farewell to our Westwood Meeting Venue
Today was the final regular club meeting in the far reaches of the west side of the city. Our next regular club meeting will be held on Friday, June 4 at the centrally located Smitty's on St. James Street. We look forward to a great turn out!
Today's Program
President Bob introduced out very own Kelly Ryback to give us a presentation on his hobby & passion about Ukuleles.
Kelly said that many years ago he and his son were walking by a music store that had a Ukulele displayed in the window and he casually mentioned that he would mind learning to play it. That Christmas, to his surprise he received that $40 ukulele as a gift and ever since then he has become passionate about music and the ukulele in particular.
Kelly displayed a number of ukuleles and said there are many different types (tenor, bass, concert) and many different types of wood are used. He said that one problem with importing a ukulele from a tropical country is that once it gets to Canada it dries out and the wood splits. He showed us one of his ukuleles that had been repaired.
The ukulele was originally made in Portugal in the late 1800’s and then immigrants brought it to Hawaii where it became famous.
Kelly said that in Júnior high he was involved in the band program but gave it up for sports in high school. He said that he wishes he would have stuck with the music program and encourages teens to go into the music programs.
Bob thanked him for his presentation.

Fines Master
Bob Foster was our fines master today. Inspired by Kelly's music trivia last week, Bob continued the theme with the opening lines of well known songs and challenged everyone to name the tune and the artist.
Judging by the number of correct responses it appears the songs weren't so well known and Bob raised some bucks for the Club. Nicely done Bob.
Chase the Ace
Felling very lucky today, Bruce had the winning ticket and pulled …… the 9 of hearts :-(
The pot grows. So much for lucky feelings.
