SERVING WINNIPEG SINCE AUGUST 27, 1951

Volume 1, Issue 19, February 5, 2026

Land Acknowledgement

The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person,  are held on Treaty One lands.  We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.

We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

February 5 Meeting Program - Speaker: Naomi Lundgren

Kelly introduced Naomi Lindgren from the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre.

Naomi is the senior resource coordinator, and the organization works out of the Deer Lodge Centre.

Naomi said that the organization exists to help seniors access resources. They offer a number of services and programs including workshops for healthy aging, fitness
programs, special events and outings. They have a drop-in Centre, a lunch and bingo, musical mealtime, cooking for one and a program for the hard of hearing.
They have a newsletter & a website, and they have approximately 1000 members.

The Centre also has a footcare nurse that comes every Tuesday & Wednesday.

Other offerings include community presentations and expos; a healthy aging resource team (HART), Rides for seniors, and a referral program for seniors (snow removal, legal counsel).

The organization has charitable status and receives funding through multiple sources.

Naomi said that the success of the organization is due to the hard work of the many
volunteers they have.

She invited us to take some of the brochures she brought.

Terry thanked Naomi for her enthusiastic and comprehensive presentation.

Coldest Night of the Year Walk - Do We Have An Interest?

The Coldest Night of the Year is a winterrific family-friendly 2 or 5 km fundraising walk in support of local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.  https://cnoy.org/location/winnipegstboniface

The club has been asked if we wish to participate. President Bob is gathering more information.  If this is something you would like to participate in, please let Bob know. If enough interest, we'll walk as Team RCWW.  Could be fun!

Fines Master:

Focusing on headlines from the Winnipeg Free Press, Terry Dick lightened our pockets today with a round of questions; good job Terry!

Special Note:  As Dan skipped out on his fines master duties last week, he has been "voluntold" to be our fines master on April 2nd.  Dan ... mark you calendar!
Fellowship Meeting Next Week

We'll meet for our informal lunch next week at Big A Tavern in the Assiniboine Inn on the Park, 1975 Portage Avenue. The parking lot and entrance into the motel is on the west side of the building along Lyle Street.

Family of Rotary

Immediately following our meeting today, Irwin popped around to the Grace Hospital to visit Ernie.  Here is Irwin's report:  "I visited Ernie this afternoon. We had a good conversation, a few laughs. While I was there, the physiotherapist came in, I left for a few minutes. They were able to get Ernie to sit up and eventually stand but no steps. Ernie thanked me for coming in to visit. I would encourage some of his old Rotary friends to drop by and say hello, Ernie is a great Rotarian and friend."

Thanks for sharing Irwin!

No birthdays to celebrate this week.
ChickenFest 2026

No update today.

Still looking for two Rotarians (or friends/family) to fill two positions:

1. Silent Auction Coordinator - procure auction items & organize auction. Auction to be held in conjunction with campaign launch tentatively set for March 26.

2. Group Sales Leader - identify potential large groups (>20) to sell bulk dinners to and organize delivery dates (can be any time/day during or shortly after campaign period).

Note: if you want to team up with someone to share the load that's OK.  Not an official Club member?  That's OK too. We just need some help!

Thought For The Day

Bob's "Words of Wisdom"

What does it mean that success is as dangerous as failure?
Whether you go up the ladder or down it
Your position is shaky,
When you stand with your two feet on the ground,
You will always keep you’re your balance.

Bob’s words of wisdom plagiarized from Tao Te Ching by Lao-tzu, circa 6th century BC
