The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person, are held on Treaty One lands. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.
We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation on Treaty Three lands.
Joint Meeting With Assiniboine Club - A Success!
On October 8, a joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Winnipeg Assiniboine was held. Thank you to both clubs for organizing this special gathering & shout-out to the Assiniboine Club for an interesting venue!
RCWA's co-presidents Clay Purves & Jenny Salie along with RCWW's president Bob Foster shared the podium to bring us the evening's program.
RCWW will return the favour and host the next joint meeting at a yet to be determined date.
The larger than usual crowd certainly added to the evening and both clubs were able to promote a little fundraising. RCWW's Chase the Ace and RCWA's Grey Cup Pool tickets were a hit.
Tonight's Program: Sue Boreskie - CEO of Winnipeg Rehfit Centre
Our speaker was Sue Boreskie from the Reh Fit Centre. Sue was a Phys-Ed student at U of M when she first did some work at the newly opened Reh Fit Centre in 1976. She worked with cardiac patients in a stress lab at a time when getting cardiac patients to exercise was unheard of.
Sue set up programs in St, Boniface & Seven Oaks Hospitals and in 2006 went back to the Reh Fit Centre.
Sue said that the Reh Fit Centre is the top wellness centre in North America. Research has shown that people that are fit have fewer health problems and do much better when they experience problems. She also said that people with more social connections also do much better and fit people save the healthcare system money.
The Reh Fit Centre is undergoing expansion over the next 10 years. They have just opened a new parkade for 300 cars and will be making further additions and upgrades to their centre. They have a plan that will cost $145M that will include 2 pools, education rooms and changing rooms.
Sue said that they offer virtual programs and they recently changed their logo as they offer programs not only for cardiac patients but for many types of patients. She also said that people should not wait for a medical event to start becoming fit. People with high blood pressure or other issue should be put on a preventative program.
Sue said that their motto is “One Body for Life” and encouraged us all to consider joining the Centre.
Special Event - October 22 - Honouring George Chapman

Chase the Ace
As we had double the audience tonight, we drew two tickets to see who can find that elusive Ace of Spades. Both winning tickets belonged to members of the Assiniboine Club but they too didn't have any luck in chasing down the ace. The pot grows as does the suspense … who will be the lucky winner?
Thought(s) For The Day - Bob's Words of Wisdom
Bob is not feeling very wise this morning so he will offer some words of wisdom from Navi Pillay, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today.
By a strange coincidence, Pillay got the news as she was attending a forum in Nuremburg in the very room where the trials of Nazi war criminals were held. Pillay commented: “efforts to weaken international justice endanger progress painstakingly made since Nuremburg, and they risk returning us to a world in which power, rather than law, determines whose suffering matters”.
