Land Acknowledgement

The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person,  are held on Treaty One lands.  We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.

We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

Ramon introduced our guest speaker, Daniel Ebanks. Daniel works for Protelec but will be speaking about his passion for cooking and his experience on the TV show Master Chef.

Daniel said that he was born in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents. His family moved & lived in many countries and his mother loved trying new foods & recipes wherever they went.

Daniel picked up his mother’s passion for cooking and learned to cook as a child. Daniel said he is a creative person and his medium is food. He dreamt of participating in the Mater Chef show and was devastated when the show was cancelled after 7 seasons. After a hiatus of a couple of years the show was scheduled for an 8th season and Daniel felt that this was his chance and he
applied to be on the show.

There were approximately 15,000 applicants and he was one of 15 chosen. The participants cannot be professionals.

Daniel was both nervous and excited to participate and said that the pressure the chefs are under is intense. They are given a number of challenges with surprise ingredients and limited time to come up with dishes.

During one of the episodes Daniel severely cut his finger but was able to complete the dish he was working on. (Daniel showed us a few clips from the shows).

The show was filmed over 2 month period. Daniel said the key to success is preparation & repetition. Daniel said that he does not anticipate opening his own restaurant but is happy to cater for private dinners.

Kelly thanked Daniel for his passionate & enthusiastic presentation.

Reporter Extraordinaire

Did you know that in addition to his WWRMW duties, Terry Dick is also responsible for recording the speaker's comments at our regular club meetings?

Terry listens intently, captures the speaker's key comments and provides them to the editor for publication in the WestWind.

A special shoutout to Terry this week for his great work!

Fines Master

We were entertained by the wit and humour of Gary Farrell today as he extracted today's fines from the group.

Thanks Gary for the mediocre job ;-)

Are We Board (bored) Yet? Don't Badge(r) Me

Remember the days when we "needed" name tags to remember who everyone is?

Well, just in case we need a reminder, the illusive name badge board has returned.

Will it make another appearance?  Who knows …

Chase the Ace

Under Art Oakes' guidance, the Chase the Ace pot is growing.  Al Goddard had the lucky ticket today and did a masterful job of drawing the …. Jack of diamonds. Thanks for letting the pot grow Alan!

Thought For The Day

Bob’s words of wisdom.

The saying “if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem” is generally credited to Eldridge Cleaver, African American author and political activist in the 60’s.  But I prefer an improved version by Bob:

If you’re not part of the solution,

You’re part of the problem.

Or you’re just part of the scenery.

Robert DeNiro in the 1998 movie “Ronin”

Which incidentally is rated as having one of the best ever movie car chases.
