Land Acknowledgement

The Rotary Club of Winnipeg West acknowledges that our meetings, held virtually or in-person,  are held on Treaty One lands.  We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Inuit, Metis, and First Nations Peoples and their cultures and rights.

We recognize that the clean water we are drinking is sourced from the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

Foster & Jones Attend District Conference

District 5550 Annual Conference, May 8-9, 2026

President Bob represented Winnipeg West and Rotarian Brook Jones was
official photographer at the 2026 District Conference held in Neepawa,
hosted by District Governor Wayne Jacobsen and the Rotary Club of
Neepawa.

Over the two days we were treated to four excellent keynote speakers:
Paul Samyn, Editor of the Winnipeg Free Press; Mark Chipman, Chairman
of True North Sports & Entertainment, Rotarian Ramesh Ferris, polio
survivor; Niigaan Sinclair, Professor of Indigenous Studies at the University
of Manitoba. There was also a video message from Bill Gates, as Rotary
and the Bill Gates Foundation are now partnering on the continuing work to
finally eradicate polio. Other short presentations focussed on various
District and Club activities and initiatives.

Twelve Clubs submitted short videos and these were shown at various
points throughout the conference. Our Winnipeg West video stacked up
pretty good compered to the others. Brook was everywhere taking a zillion
photos.

The event concluded with the passing of the District Governorship from
Wayne Petersen to Warren Thompson of Winnipeg Assiniboine Club. Next
year’s District Conference will be in Winnipeg.

Congratulations to RCWW!

Under the guidance of co-chairs Foghorn Leghorn & Panchito, the 2026 ChickenFest Committee delivered an egg-ceptional annual fund-raiser.

Beginning with our launch party on March 26 (dedicated to Ernie Halligan) at a great venue courtesy of the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation (CRF) and food provided by Chicken Delight (CD), cupcakes for dessert (Brook got us a great deal), and the evening emceed by Nicole Dube we got off to a great start with special guests from our Manitoba Government, the 191 Air Cadets Squadron and the Westminster Housing Society. Prizes abounded provided by CD, CRF and Raman Talwar. A fun evening with games of skill and visiting with friends & fellow Rotarians.

Throughout the next 5 weeks CRF & CD helped promote ChickenFest with print media, social media, and radio interview opportunities. We even had an appearance on CTV's Your Morning show.

Additional media coverage was enjoyed in the Winnipeg Free Press due to Kelly Ryback's press release and Fred Morris's article chronicling 75 years of our fund raiser.

Rotarians rose to the occasion by selling and encouraging donations to make this a great year.

Stan Rybuck & Jack Peterson toiled over the migration of data from our online ordering system to our ChickenFest management system.  Stan made sure that all orders were properly coordinated with CD and delivered on time.

Alan Goddard did an exceptional job of organizing drivers and working with the Cadets to get their huge order delivered.

Kelly Ryback championed the 50/50 Draw from set-up to working with LGCA to the final draw.  Kelly has some thoughts & recommendations to make this a staple of future ChickenFests; a revenue growth opportunity for sure.

Brook Jones' professional photography & videography skills and other new creative & innovative ideas helped immensely with our promotional efforts.

President Bob provided his usual support and helped spread the word to the other Rotary Clubs and was the main contact with the Westminster Housing Society.

As we wrap up this year, we also want to recognize Terry Cooper for his bean counting skills, not to mention his and Enid Cooper's work on keeping Ernie's usual customers as supporters. Ernie must have been looking down us to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Foghorn & Panchito want to express our great thanks & appreciation for a job well done to everyone involved.  It was so much fun, we'll do it again next year!

50/50

Under the supervision of the LGCA inspector our 50/50 draw was conducted promptly at 1:00pm on Thursday, May 14 during our regular lunch meeting at Smitty's restaurant.

The final jackpot was $2,280.  The winner gets 50% of the total jackpot, or $1,140

And the winner is: Marion Grant

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who played!

Fines Master

At the last minute, Kelly Ryback was “volun-told” to be our fines master today.

Drawing on his love of trivia and knowledge of music, Kelly extracted fines from the group.  Nicely done Kelly!

Chase the Ace

Today's “luck” ticket belonged to Stan Rybuck.  Stan did us all a favour and drew the 3 of Diamonds.  Well done Stan!  The pot continues to grow.

Thought For The Day - Bob's Words of “Wisdom”

As Westwind readers may know, I travelled to Russell in March for the District Leadership Seminar and to Neepawa last weekend for the District Conference.  I also attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Corfu last fall.

I am reminded of Mark Twain’s opinion on travel, which is applicable whether the travel is to another part of the Province or to another part of the world.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”           – Mark Twain
